Additional Information

 William Owens is an alumnus of East Hall High School and the University of Georgia where he graduated cum laude with a Bachelors of Music Education.  While attending the University of Georgia, Mr. Owens studied trumpet with Dr. Edward Sandor and Mr. Fred Mills, formerly of the Canadian Brass.  He served as Drum Major and Band Captain of the Redcoat Marching Band and conductor of the Derbies Pep Band while performing with the Concert, Symphonic Band, Symphony Band and the Wind Symphony as a trumpet and piano performer.  Mr. Owens has served as a guest conductor with the Symphony Band and Concert Band giving performances while studying literature technique with members of the conducting faculty including Dr. John N. Culvahouse, Dr. F. David Romines and Dr. H.D. Satterwhite (Band), Dr. Mitos Andya and Professor Alan Crowell (Choral) and Professor Mark Cedel (Orchestral).


While at UGA, Mr. Owens was actively involved in the Festivals and Workshops sponsored by the School of Music including the December Middle School Festival, January High School Music Festival and the Summer Music and Marching Camps.  He has worked with many music programs across the state as a Drum Major and Brass/Drill instructor and is actively sought after as a Leadership / Conducting Clinician and Adjudicator.


After graduating from the University of Georgia, Mr. Owens was appointed the Interim Director of Bands at Valdosta High School.  While at Valdosta, Mr. Owens led the Marchin’ Cats in a regionally televised performance at the Georgia Dome for the 2003 Football Semi-finals in Atlanta, Georgia. During the spring of 2004, Mr. Owens conducted the VHS Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony in the District 8 Large Group Performance Evaluation in Waycross, GA.  Following the successful LGPE performances, Mr. Owens led the VHS Band in performance for the 2005 Music Festivals Bahamas cruise earning a Superior rating from a nationally recognized adjudicator.  After Valdosta, Mr. Owens served as Associate Director of Bands at East Hall High School in Gainesville, GA.  While at East Hall HS, Mr. Owens’ responsibilities included working with the Marching Band, Wind Symphony, Concert Band as well as creating and building the EHHS Indoor Percussion Ensemble.


After leaving East Hall High School, Mr. Owens took the position as Director of Bands and Fine Arts Department Chair at South Gwinnett High School.  While at South Gwinnett, the Bands consistently earned Superior and Excellent Ratings in both concert and marching performances.  In addition to his duties as Director, Mr. Owens was responsible for hosting the annual Southern Star Marching Invitational, the Taste of South Gwinnett (sponsored by the Fine Arts Department) as well as general oversight of the entire Fine Arts Department including Art, Band, Chorus, Dance, Drama & Orchestra.


Mr. Owens has past and present memberships with the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA), the National Bandmasters Association (NBA), Collegiate Band Directors National Association (CBDNA), World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE), The International Trumpet Guild (ITG), Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia  and also served as Secretary and Vice President of the UGA Redcoat Band Alumni Board.  Currently Mr. Owens is the GMEA District 13 Honor Band Chair having served in this capacity since 2008.
